statement

I see drawing as the first expression. What I mean is that, I feel that the simplicity of the medium makes it a more pure and sometimes more personal expression than say painting. The pencil is the extension of the hand with no other elements to interfere with the immediacy of feeling and thought expressed in the line.

The opportunity to examine and penetrate the surface of things, of people, is something I find fascinating. Working on a portrait over time, and going through many subtle transformations of human expression until I feel it comes alive is a great motivation. Prior to the point where the drawing takes over and directs me thereis a struggle of wills so to speak, where I am pushing in different directions, in a sense experimenting.

This sense of discovery is crucial. It seems that everyday something new can be found in the well known. The concept of time too, plays a large factor. The meticulous process and organic development of a drawing or painting provides feedback to my perception. These methods uncover subtleties that, had I worked in a faster manner, might not have been revealed.
