"The only virtue to it is to put down an idea about what you feel at the moment.”

— Andrew Wyeth

Description:

Welcome (back) to watercolor! Whether you’re returning to this elegant and expressive medium or starting from scratch, this systematic exploration of watercolor is the perfect way to grow both your appreciation for this material and your ability to render sensitive portraits. The human face is one of the most interesting and challenging subjects for an artist. The versatility of watercolor lends itself well to both quick, energetic gestures and careful, patient realism. We’ll play with the range of expression this material offers while developing a keener eye for expression and likeness.

This class will cover the following topics:

  • A review of beginning watercolor practices, including flat washes, gradients, variegated washes, and dry-brush
  • Wet-on-dry and wet-into-wet techniques
  • Transparent glazing
  • Portrait anatomy and features of the face
  • Capturing likeness with speed and confidence
  • Master copies, cast paintings, and self-portraits

Fee:
$340

Minimum Enrollment: 4
Maximum Enrollment: 12

    About the instructor:

Samantha Haring is a Midwest painter from Des Plaines, Illinois. She makes quiet paintings in a noisy world. Haring earned her MFA from Northern Illinois University and her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has also studied in Italy at the International School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture; it was there that she fully developed her commitment to light, color, and observational painting. Haring’s work has been published in New American Paintings as well as recent Manifest International Drawing and Painting Annuals.

Haring was one of the 2015-2016 Artists-in-Residence at Manifest. She has been a Resident Instructor at the Drawing Center since 2016; she also teaches drawing and design courses at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design. She currently maintains a studio in Cincinnati, where she spends an inordinate amount of time staring at the color of dust. Watercolor was her first love.
